Thesis Title |
An Analysis of the Abidance and Violation of the Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle and Its Significance on Elementary Education---A Case Study of Program Grade 1 of Hunan TV |
Proposal Basis (Literature Review) |
As what I study in this thesis is based on a totally new TV Program (it is still updating when I stared to write), I can not find any thesis writing directly on this topic. So I wrote this thesis only with the relevant reference of Pragmatic and Teaching methodology.
Although Pragmatics is a relatively new subject in linguistic field, its practicability still attracts a growing number of linguists working on this and they have so far provided a good deal of ideas and research results. Theory of the Cooperative Principles was first raised by Grice in his speech in Harvard University, 1967 (Part of his speech was published in Cole and Morgan, eds, 1975). After that, this theory has been developed and perfected into many branches by subsequent linguists. Leech (Principles of pragmatics, 1983) developed the Cooperative Principles in 1983 by raising another theory that is called the Politeness Principles. He thought Grice did not explain well why people would violate the maxim of the Cooperative Principles. So he came up with the Politeness Principles which can “rescue” the Cooperative Principles and provide a reasonable explanation for people’s violation. Later, P. Brown and Lavinson also help fulfilling this theory. |
